Who Actually Owns Your Website Content? A Kathmandu, Nepal Perspective

A question we always encourage clients in Kathmandu, Nepal to ask before signing with any developer, including us, is simple: who legally owns the website's code, content, and domain once the project is finished?

Some developers, particularly cheaper freelance arrangements, retain ownership of custom code or keep hosting and domain registration under their own accounts, effectively holding the business's website hostage if the relationship ends badly. A clear contract should state explicitly that the client owns the final deliverable outright upon full payment.

Stock images, fonts, and third-party plugins used in a website often come with their own licensing terms separate from the custom work, and it is worth understanding which assets are fully owned versus licensed for use, particularly if you plan to reuse the design elsewhere later. A reputable agency will document this clearly rather than leaving it ambiguous.
